Song Story: Best That You Can

by | May 19, 2017 | 2 comments

It was a spring weekend. I spent the days hiking Zion National Park, and the evenings playing concerts with my good friend and Native flutist Mark Holland.

But it was Mother’s Day weekend, and I was missing my wife and kids.

I was also thinking about my own mother. Getting to see my two boys interact with my wife, I get a little clearer picture of what it must be like to be my mom (no need to comment, Mom!). Boys can be needy one moment and fiercely independent the next. They can be clingy one day and impossible to catch the next.

Most of these words came at me in a flash on that trip to Zion. If you’re a mom with boys, or a boy with a mom, I hope you can relate to this song.

BEST THAT YOU CAN

Moms don’t get love songs from rough little boys

Just a handful of weeds and a whole lot of noise

They squirm when you hug ‘em, they run from your hand

So love ‘em the best that you can

They want to be good but they have to be tough

They don’t really do that emotional stuff

So if they won’t kiss you it’s not ‘cause they’re bad

Just love ‘em the best that you can

When your boy has lost his way

Feeling like he’s all alone

Count on this, he’ll want to see your face

And that’s when he will think of home

So don’t expect roses or cute homemade cards

‘Cause flowers are girly and crafts are too hard

They really do care, they just don’t understand

So love ‘em the best that you can

Someday they’ll find girlfriends and do what boys do

Buy presents and jewelry – write poetry too

They learned it from you mom, so don’t feel too sad

Just love ‘em the best that you can

When your boy has lost his way

Feeling like he’s all alone

Count on this, he’ll want to see your face

And that’s when he will think of home

Now men are just boys who have grown to be tall

And weeks may go by without one little call

So picture that toddler you held on your lap

And love him the best

Love him the best

Love him the best that you can
